Class Discussions
- All discussions will be based on the assigned readings, videos and/or presentations. All deadlines must be met in order to receive credit. We will use the Laulima Discussions tool to foster a collaborative effort in gaining knowledge of the topics. Responses to discussion questions I have posted should be responded to within the corresponding week's thread. Questions regarding the course outside of the course content or material can be posted in the Questions thread within the Discussions tool--or sent to me via email (the recommended option). Discussions are worth 10 points.
- All assignments will be based on the assigned materials. These assignments will be more detail-oriented and require more in-depth analysis and writing in comparison to the discussion activities. Instructor comments will appear (when necessary) in red text in the assignment submission box. Assignments are worth 15 points.
- Although this course is experienced through an online setting, it is important to connect with the communities in which we live. This assignment requires that you attend and participate in ONE community event at some point during the semester and write about your experience. Visits to Bishop Museum and ʻIolani Palace are acceptable options for this assignment. Event options will be sent out over the course of the semester as I receive information regarding lectures, festivals, and other community events. There are a number of work sites that regularly host community work days, information regarding these locations will be sent out via the announcements tool. It is your responsibility to contact the event locations to determine scheduled 'work days'. The venues that I will announce are located on Oʻahu. Email me early in the semester if you are NOT taking this course on Oʻahu or if you are physically unable to participate. Additionally, you are encouraged to email me if you know of an event happening within your community that you are interested in attending and would like to share with the rest of the class. Ka Hoʻoulu ʻIke is worth 30 points.
- Unit exams will be based on your command of the information presented in the readings, videos and power points. This may include any of the following: terminology (both in English and Pacific languages), ideas, concepts, people, dates, etc. Unit tests may take the form of any of the following: multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, short answer, and essay. Unit Tests are worth 30 points.
- Reading quizzes are based on the assigned reading materials from the textbook, assigned articles, or websites and are meant to ensure that you are reading and highlighting important aspects of the text. Questions will be ordered in the manner they appear in the article, will be based on the wording of the texts, and may take the form of t/f, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank type questions. You can take the quiz an unlimited number of times but please note the following: Due to variations in spelling and other possible errors, the first grade that appears in your gradebook may not be your final score. I need to go in and double check everything that laulima automatically corrects. However, I may not go in and double check the RQs as soon as they are submitted--typically, I wait until the due date has passed to grade all work. Reading quizzes will be taken in the Tests and Quizzes tool and are worth 10 points.
Note: The number of activities may vary from the numbers listed below.
