Welcome to Hawaiian Studies 107 at Leeward Community College, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi. This is our external course site homepage and is meant to work in conjunction with the course Laulima site.
Hawaiian Studies 107 will provide you with an introduction to a Native perspective on specific themes such as origins, language, spirituality, environs, the arts, history, and contemporary issues pertaining to Hawai‘i and Oceania at large. During the course you will study various sources of information including academic research, contemporary literature, film, and political and legal documents. The purpose of this course is to enable your recognition of Native voices and to aid your development in understanding Native world-views.
Student Kuleana
Kuleana is the Hawaiian word for responsibility--although it has other meanings as well. Learning is a responsibility. The online classroom is a safe place for exploring information and acquiring knowledge but this also means that there are certain kuleana that must be fulfilled. The 107 student's kuleana include regular submission of assignments, timely reading of materials, participation in all activities, and mindfulness of peers and the instructor.

Laulima is the University of Hawaiʻi's online collaborative learning environment. Laulima provides students with accessibility to course content and communication tools for interaction with the instructor and other students taking the course. A course offered through Laulima can be accessed at any time during the day or night except for between the hours of 3:00 and 4:00 am when server backup and maintenance is carried out. - Expect lots of reading and video watching!
- All WEEKLY activities in the UNIT pages and Laulima will appear on SUNDAYS (or earlier) by 11:55 pm.
- Responses to topics I post in the discussions tool are due on THURSDAYS by 11:55 pm.
- Responses to posts submitted by fellow classmates are due on SUNDAYS by 11:55 pm.
- All OTHER WEEKLY activities--Tests and Quizzes, Assignments, etc., indicated in the UNIT pages are due on SUNDAYS by 11:55 pm.
- Directions for the WEEKLY activities are located in the UNIT pages. These activities will be completed using the tools in Laulima.
